Dr. Curry—associate professor, Institute for Ethnic Studies and Department of History

What is your area of specialization?
African history

Why did you choose this field?
I saw comparisons with the American Civil Rights Movement and the liberation struggle in South Africa. I have been going to South Africa for 22 years spanning my career as a doctoral student and as a professor! I love and devour South African history. It is ekhaya lami, my home in spirit and in intellect!

What is your favorite course to teach?
History of South Africa--because I can bring in a lot of oral testimonies that I conducted and primary sources that I have collected. South Africa's history parallels with the American Civil Rights Movement and it is good way to show the interconnection of places on the African continent with those around the world.

What are you currently researching?
Topics on women and gender in African societies and Africa since 1800

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
Traveling, writing poetry, taking photos, and attending concerts

Professional organizations:
African Studies Association, Association of the Study of World Wide Africa Diaspora (ASWAD), Oral History Association
